Northeast Ohio Hospice has a team of compassionate, dedicated volunteers who improve the quality of life of people with life limiting illnesses. Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team, filling roles that range from direct contact with patients to providing clerical and community outreach support for the organization.

How Hospice Volunteers Serve:

  • Volunteers are trained to understand and provide end of life care to our patients and support to families.

  • Volunteers provide support through visiting, reading, taking walks, writing letters, bringing in music, and supervising therapeutic visits with pets.

  • Volunteers with necessary certification can also provide massage therapy, aroma therapy or therapeutic touch.

  • Volunteers allow for respite for the family: they can allow family caregivers the opportunity to take care of necessary errands, exercise, or simply have some time alone.

  • Hospice volunteers can work closely with the hospice’s bereavement staff. Duties may include helping with mailings to families or lending a supportive ear to a grieving family member.

  • A volunteer with clerical skills can serve Northeast Ohio Hospice by helping in the office with administrative duties, responsibilities can range from preparing mailings or bereavement letters to helping organize and facility community events.

Northeast Ohio currently requires volunteers to be 18 years of age or older. Like other members of the hospice team working directly with patients and families, Northeast Ohio Hospice volunteers are required to show evidence of vaccine history or immunity to certain contagious diseases included COVID-19. All volunteers are required to complete a two-step tuberculosis test and have a background check completed. Volunteers play a vital role in the lives of our patients and families.
